lyrics

They renovated my high school
And moved all the ball fields to different spots,
But when they redid the baseball field
Somehow nobody gave it much thought.
The plate was next to the on-ramp for
66 headed into DC,
And if you fouled off a pitch it could end
In a pileup and casualties.

We never had any home games and we
Had to practice in a public park;
No batting cages, no lights, every practice
Was over when it would get dark.
One day we needed a batting tee,
Nathan Hamme turned his car back around.
He grabbed an orange construction cone
From the road, didn’t even slow down.

That’s the story of the Mason Mustangs,
Always on the road.
Nobody ever even saw us play
Except moms, dads and scarecrows.

All the schools that we played were out west
And I missed all my sixth period classes.
I did my homework on school buses bound
For Strasburg or Clarke or Manassas.
I’d sit and watch as the country rolled by
With my headphones punk rock CDs.
And then we’d stretch and we’d throw and we’d play,
And then back on the bus rolling East

That’s the story of the Mason Mustangs,
No place to call home.
Nobody ever even saw us play
Except moms, dads and scarecrows.
